Vincent K. Shaudys, a longtime South Bend resident died Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at the Grays Harbor Health and Rehabilitation Center in Aberdeen. He was 85. Vincent was born October 2, 1927 in Newtown, Pennsylvania to Vincent and Anna (Kirkbride) Shaudys. Vince was a birthright Quaker, and member of the Bucks County Makefield Monthly Meeting, at Newtown. He attended public schools in Newtown, Yardley and was a graduate of George School, a Quaker Prep School. He enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy for two years. He went on to attend Pennsylvania State University, and was graduated from Duke University with a major in History. He received Doctor of Philosophy degree in Geography from Ohio State University in 1956. While attending Ohio State he met his future wife, Jean Hazeltine, of South Bend, Wash. They were married in the South Bend Methodist Church in September of 1956. Vince taught at University of Montana in Missoula; he was a Fulbright Professor at the University of Dacca, in East Pakistan. Then in 1962, taught at California State University in Hayward, Calif. He retired as full professor and Chairman of the Geography Department in 1991. He joined his family in South bend as a permanent resident. In March of 2006, Vince was honored with the Reagan Award, given only to those who show outstanding commitment to the Republican cause. In his spare time Vince enjoyed his talent at stone masonry, building walls along First Street in South Bend for the tennis court, along the parking lot at the Methodist Church in South Bend and the concrete pedestal at the Robert Bush Memorial Park. Vince was a member of the South Bend School Board since 1994, and became Chairman in 1998. He was also a member of the Pacific County Historical Society since 1992 and served as President for a time, beginning in 1993. a former President and current member of the South Bend Kiwanis Club, Treasurer of the United Methodist Church and Boy Scout Commissioner. He was also a member of the American Legion and on the Foundation Board for the Grays Harbor Community College. His wife Jean survives him at the family home in South Bend, also surviving him is a son Fred, of Duvall, WA and Aukland, New Zealand; a daughter Helen and granddaughter Piper also of DuVall, WA; brothers, Hugh Shaudys of Washington Crossing, PA and Dr. Edgar Shaudys (Elizabeth) of Columbus, Ohio; brother-in-law, Dr. Fred Hazeltine (Peggy) of Des Moines and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, August 16, 2013 at the South Bend United Methodist Church. Memorial donations may be made to the South Bend United Methodist Church, the South Bend Kiwanis Club, the Pacific County Historical Society or the Bucks County Makefield Monthly Meeting.
