Vera Margaret Hewitt, a South Bend resident, died Friday, September 22, 2017 at her home; she was 86. Vera was born June 18, 1931 in Yakima, WA to Homer Jay Myers & Vivian Margaret (Myers) Thomas. Vera grew up in Bremerton, WA graduating from high school in 1950 and went on to marry Glenn M. Hewitt Jr. May 17, 1953. Vera worked for the Supply Department at the Puget Sound Navy Yard during the Korean War. Glenn & Vera had a son in 1954, Steven J. Hewitt. Together they moved to the Willapa Harbor in 1971. Glenn preceded Vera in death in May of 2015 and Steven her son preceded her in death in February of 2016. She was a member of the Wesleyan Church in Raymond. Jesus and her family were her top priority and she cherished her friends. Vera loved writing poetry, reading and camping. One of her favorite things she looked forward to was hosting for the Forest Service. Vera was also a member of the East Raymond Ladies Aid and was very active in the group Friend of the South Bend Library. She is survived by her brothers Ross Thomas of Grandview, WA and Harry Thomas of Kennewick, WA, as well as a sister Dolores Durbin of Prosser, WA and Granddaughters Sarah Behmer of Nokomis, FL and Rebecca (Enyart) Hewitt of South Bend, WA. Vera respectfully asked her family not to hold her a memorial service. She was cremated and placed with her loving husband at the Fern Hill Cemetery. Cremation arrangements were in care of Stoller’s Mortuary in Raymond, WA.
