Shirley Pauline Coates, 81, of South Bend, passed away peacefully at home on July 15, 2026, surrounded by the place and people she loved.

Shirley was born on January 26, 1945, to Loyd and Pauline Downy, who preceded her in death. She is survived by her beloved husband, Wilbur Coates of South Bend. Shirley and Wilbur were married on January 13 and had just celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary—a testament to a lifetime of love, laughter, and memories shared together. 

Shirley was a woman who found joy in the simple things. She loved ceramics and plants, and she had a special place in her heart for animals. She loved to laugh, have a good time, and make the people around her smile. She was known for her warm hugs and was always ready to welcome someone with open arms. 

Shirley also had a style all her own. She loved a chunky necklace, a layered look, and never seemed afraid to express herself. Those little touches were just another part of the personality that made her unforgettable. 

She will be deeply missed by her husband, Wilbur; her brother, Wayne; and all of the family and friends whose lives she touched. Shirley leaves behind a lifetime of love, laughter, hugs, and memories that will be cherished forever. 

A memorial service celebrating Shirley’s life will be held Saturday, August 15, at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church in South Bend. In lieu of remembering Shirley through sadness, her family hopes she will be remembered the way she lived—with laughter, love, a warm hug, and perhaps a little something beautiful growing in the garden.
