Patricia Jean Green passed away peacefully at her home in South Bend on March 15, 2025 at the age of 94. She was born to Harvey and Hazel (Hazelle) Omvig in Madison, South Dakota on August 4, 1930, at the home of her grandmother and grandfather Lloyd. She moved with her family to Arnolds Park, Iowa in 1935, and again to Worthington, Minnesota in 1940. She and her mother then moved to Los Angeles, California due to WW2 in 1944 and her brother remained in Iowa. She graduated from John H. Francis Polytechnical School in Los Angeles, CA in 1948 with strong skills in Art and Art History, and was an amazing artist in drawing, and sketching many things such as portraits and landscapes. In 1948 she also met Roger Green, and they later married in Las Vegas, NV in April 1951. Roger and Patricia had two daughters born 17 years apart. Susan Rae in 1953, and Johanna Paula in 1970. Both children were raised in Whittier, California, and later in 1982 Roger, Pat and Johanna moved to South Bend where Roger planned to semi-retire and build a log house in Raymond. The family stayed instead in South Bend, in the same house for over 40 years. Pat was a very creative person and was always drawing or painting or doing some sort of needlecraft or quilting, or crochet.
She was very active in the local community including the Friends of the South Bend Library for many years, Propylaeum Club, First Lutheran Church and their council meetings, and the Senior center in Raymond as well. She regularly went for coffee at Boondocks coffee shop for many years where she would sit and chat with local friends who stayed friends for many years also. She loved gardening and planting flowers and had a very keen eye for planting herbs and flowers together, and her home always was very welcoming and cheery. She was a “mom” to many of Johanna’s friends and always welcomed anyone to the house with a smile and a hug. She loved her cats also, and had two cats for many years, Buddy and Leo, and they were well cared for many, many years. Patricia was a fabulous cook also and could make amazing pies and cakes and was very talented with decorating them as well. Patricia was preceded in death by her husband Roger in 2009, her mother Hazelle Omvig in 2007, and her brother Richard Omvig in 2009.
Patricia is survived by her daughters Susan Meister of Whidbey Island, and Johanna Green Nicely and her son in law Jimmy Nicely of South Bend. Her grandson Greg Norman and his wife Kristin and her great-grandson Cole of Edmonds, WA, and her close friend Don Scott and his two sons Daren and Dylan of here in South Bend, who thought of her as a mother and grandmother for many years as well and will miss her greatly. At Patricia’s wish there will be no funeral services. In lieu of flowers a donation can be made to any local animal shelter or rescue as she loved animals or a charity of your choice.
