Eugene (Gene) Norman Gurr a lifetime resident of Raymond passed away on December 8, 2014 at the age of 90 at the Willapa Harbor Health & Rehab. He was born in Raymond on April 26, 1924 to William & Phoebe (Arnold) Gurr. Gene graduated from Raymond High School, class of 1942. He enlisted in the Navy during WWII from 1943 to 1946. Gene was a Second Class Torpedoman aboard the USS Oakland, which he helped put into commission. Upon his return from the war, he met Patricia Mullins from Lebam and they were married on December 13, 1947. After his fathers death in 1955 he took over the family business “Gurr & Son Contractors†with his brother in law Dave Wolfenbarger. Gurr & Son was responsible for building a number of businesses in Pacific County, such as Security State Bank, Raymond Elks, former Dick’s Foods in Raymond and South Bend, the old Dairy Queen, Pioneer Grocery. He and his wife Pat also owned and operated Pacific County Lumber from 1974-1988. They enjoyed traveling to Spain, Austria, Italy and numerous times to Hawaii. Gene was an avid trap shooter and traveled to Canada, Arizona, Nevada, Oregon and California to compete in many Trap Shoot Competitions. He enjoyed water skiing at Mason Lake at the cabin he helped build with the Wolfenbargers and John & Lucille Mc Dowell. He was a long time member of the Raymond VFW, Raymond Elks, Willapa Harbor Gun Club and the Evergreen Gun Club. He is preceded in death by his parents William & Phoebe, brother Jim, wife Pat, son Joe and sister Helen Wolfenbarger. Survived by his son Chuck (Jackie) Gurr of Long Beach California and numerous loving nieces and nephews. In his later years he was blessed with having Marsha Hurley-Thomason as his caregiver. A celebration of his life will be held at the Raymond Elks on Saturday December 27, 2014 from 11:00 â€" 2:00. Memorials may be made to the Willapa Harbor Gun Club, Raymond Senior Center or Willapa Harbor Health & Rehab. Arrangements are in care of Stoller’s Mortuary in Raymond.
